Physical Forms
A study in contours and values

My current passion centers around translating the play of light and dark on the human form into the simple medium of graphite on paper.

The compositions are created using available light, modified with the use of shutters, blinds or curtains. The late afternoon light falls across the model, intensifying the form through elongated shadows.

The values are built slowly, from a gentle crosshatch technique, light deepening into darkness. This transforms the figure into a collection of abstract shapes, and then back to the representation of the human form.
